Google confirms that the Gemini Nano local large model will not come pre-installed on Pixel 8 phones

The Gemini Nano, a lightweight version of Google's big Gemini model for mobile devices, is unique in its ability to handle local tasks without the need to connect to an external server. The model has previously been confirmed to support Google's Pixel 8 Pro phones.

Google released two new phones in October 2023, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Both the phones are powered by Tensor G3 processor and are available in 128GB and 256GB storage specifications. While the overall configuration of the two phones is the same, they differ in terms of RAM specifications.The Pixel 8 comes with 8GB of RAM while the Pixel 8 Pro has been upgraded to 12GB of RAM with additional options of 512GB and 1TB versions.

In a YouTube program, the folks at Google explained why the Gemini Nano won't come pre-installed on the Pixel 8 phone. They said that due to the hardware limitations of the Pixel 8, especially its 8GB RAM configuration, it may not be able to fully support the Gemini Nano's operational requirements. As a result, Google has decided to limit the model to Pixel 8 Pro phones in order to ensure that users get the best experience possible.

Nonetheless, Google has also revealed that in the future they plan to introduce the Gemini Nano on other high-end devices. this means that more Google devices are expected to benefit from this powerful native AI language macromodel as hardware technology continues to advance and upgrade.
