Microsoft partners with Project Gutenberg to create over 5,000 free audiobooks for eBooks using AI technology

In the near future.Microsoft corporationCollaboration with Project Gutenberg, the Free Digital Library Program, to utilizeartificial intelligence (AI)(AI) technology has produced over 5,000 free audiobooks for the e-book library. This initiative will bring a new reading experience to readers while providing convenience to the visually impaired.

In the program.Microsoft corporationThe researchers combined AI techniques such as machine learning, automatic text selection and natural speech synthesis to realize the whole process of automatically converting eBooks into speech. First, they developed an algorithm that automatically analyzes the structure of an eBook and distinguishes between the body text and non-critical sections such as page numbers and tables. Next, they used text-to-speech technologies such as WaveNet, Tacotron and FastSpeech to generate a natural read-aloud voice similar to that of a real person. In addition, the system is able to recognize the narrator, dialogues and different characters in the book and adjust the voice accordingly to achieve a phonetic representation of the storyline.

Through this program, Microsoft has collected and organized more than 35,000 hours of audiobook voice data, including all kinds of classic literature, drama, biography and other works. These voice data will be made available to users free of charge as open source. Users can also use their own recording of a small amount of voice, to generate "read the whole book in their own voice" effect. This project not only enriches the content of audiobooks on the website, but also provides convenience for the visually impaired.

Microsoft said they hope to bring more classic literature to readers around the world and inspire interest in reading through this partnership. In addition, they will continue to explore how to use AI technology to improve the quality of speech synthesis and how to convert more books into audiobook format to provide users with richer reading options.
