Huawei's rotating chairman says it will build a sustainable AI computing industry ecosystem

Huawei (brand)Vice Chairman and Rotating Chairman Xu Zhijun gave a speech at the 2023 World Computing Conference revealing theHuawei (brand)Update on Computing Strategies and Implications for ChinaAIThe judgment of the development direction of the computing industry ecology. Xu Zhijun said that in the face of the current pressure that continues to strengthen, China's computing industry needs to firmly build a sustainable computing industry ecology.

Xu Zhijun pointed out that China's computing industry has been affected by everything from design tools, materials, manufacturing equipment to chip products. He emphasized the importance of large-scale use for the progress and development of the computing industry, and argued that sustainable development can only be achieved by constructing an arithmetic infrastructure based on practically accessible chip manufacturing processes. Currently, China's general-purpose computing industry is developing in parallel in the form of three ecosystems: the X86 ecosystem, the Pentium ecosystem, and the RISC-V open-source ecosystem. In the future, these three eco-systems will jointly determine the future-oriented development of China's computing industry.

Huawei has been driving the development of the computing industry. Since announcing its computing industry strategy in 2019, the "Kunpeng + Rising" portfolio has been seen as a challenger to the rules of the industry. However, Huawei faces two major challenges: the Hongmeng ecosystem for consumer and IoT, and the Kunpeng+Shengteng portfolio for the computing industry. In response, Huawei is working with China Electronics to accelerate the merger of the Kunpeng ecosystem with the PKS ecosystem to form the Pengteng ecosystem, and is launching a series of software support policies to improve ecosystem development.

As for what the computing industry includes, Xu Zhijun said that all computer-related can be included in the computing industry, but the most important problem to be solved is to return to the computer origin. He believes that PCs, servers, operating systems, databases, and the processors, memory sticks, SSDs, etc. that make up these devices are the most important issues that need to be addressed. He said that the manufacturing capability of basic components such as connectivity card chips and RAID card cores is a difficult point that China's computing industry needs to break through.

Xu Zhijun also mentioned the challenges facing China. He pointed out that China faces difficulties in acquiring advanced chips or advanced computing systems due to U.S. export controls. At the same time, China's semiconductor manufacturing process is relatively backward, and to achieve sustainable growth, it must be constructed on top of accessible semiconductor manufacturing areas. He called on universities to increase the training of key processors, operating systems, and database talents, and suggested that policy should enliven the open source ecosystem.

Huawei rotating chairman Xu Zhijun's speech emphasized the importance of building a sustainable computing industry ecosystem. China's computing industry needs to promote technological advancement and product development based on large-scale use, while addressing the issue of basic component manufacturing capabilities. In the face of challenges, Xu Zhijun proposed strategies to build the Hongmeng ecosystem and the Kunpeng+Shengteng combination, and called for increased talent training and policy support in key areas. These initiatives will help promote the sustainable development of China's computing industry.
