According to people familiar with the matter, Meta is still actively working on augmented reality (AR) glasses and plans to launch the first 1,000 pairs of first-generation AR glasses next year. To produce the attention-grabbing glasses, Meta has adopted a series of complex and expensive manufacturing arrangements involving factories in China, Taiwan and the United States.

Meta decided to try a special and expensive compound inside the lenses of the eyeglasses, but due to policy restrictions, the compound could not be easily exported outside of the United States. As a result, Meta had to assemble the lenses in the U.S. while the other components of the eyewear were manufactured in China and Taiwan, respectively. This manufacturing model underscores the complexity and challenges Meta has to deal with when building innovative products.
