UNESCO Releases World's First Generative AI Education Guide, Calls for National Regulations, Teacher Training

United NationsUNESCO's latest report on the use of generative methods in education and research. AI The Guide marks an important milestone in the global field of generative AI. The guide is designed to guide the more effective integration of generative AI technologies into education to drive innovation and growth in education.

This historic guide begins with a detailed explanation of the nature and workings of generative AI, providing readers with an in-depth understanding of this cutting-edge technology. It then delves into the controversies associated with generative AI and the challenges the field of education may face, with a particular emphasis on how the digital divide may widen as a result. This insightful analysis provides policymakers and educators with greater clarity so that they can better utilize the potential of generative AI in the best interests of students.

In addition to this, the guide identifies key initiatives that governments should take. These include teacher training to ensure that educators are able to fully master generative AI technologies and apply them to their teaching practices. In addition, the guidelines recommend setting an age limit of 13 for using AI tools in the classroom to ensure that students are exposed to the technology at the right age.

In June of this year, UNESCO warned of the potential risks of using generative AI in schools at too rapid a pace and the lack of public oversight and regulations. And the latest global survey data shows that fewer than 10% of schools and universities have specific policies and guidance on the use of generative AI.

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, emphasized that "generative AI not only represents an important opportunity for human development, but also has the potential to trigger harm and prejudice. Its integration into education will not be effective in the absence of public engagement, necessary policy safeguards and regulation."

This guide has been published to provide guidance to the global education system to ensure that the use of generative AI technologies is safer and more beneficial, helping to promote the sustainability of education globally.
