Allowed to say NO: Google's AI support site takes control of whether or not to allow AI training

in the wake ofOpenAI(used form a nominal expression)ChatGPT,Microsoft corporationof Bing Chat andgoogleBard is generativeAIservices are becoming increasingly popular in replacing traditional search engines, some individuals and businesses are beginning to express concerns about the use of their website data by these AI models, and they don't want their website content to be used in the training of AI models.

To address this, Google today announced a new approach that allows website developers to autonomously choose whether to allow their site content to be accessed by the Bard and Vertex AI services and whether to use it for the training of these API models.

In a blog post, Google describes theGoogle Internet company-Extended, a new control option that web developers can use to manage whether their site supports Bard and Vertex AI.

Currently, websites can list content that is denied access to crawlers via robots.txt files, and Google believes that all AI model providers should provide this transparency and control. However, as AI applications continue to expand, websites will face the complexity of managing data for multiple purposes. Google says it will share more information about this soon.

According to the Google support documentationGoogle Internet company-Extended doesn't have a separate HTTP request for user agent (UA) strings, but instead crawls through existing Google UA strings that robots.txt user agent tokens can be used to control.

In addition to today's statement, Google also said that they will continue to "explore other machine-readable methods of choice and control available to websites." They also provided a link for websites to sign up for a mailing list to receive updates on ways Google is improving the control of their websites. This initiative is expected to provide website owners with more autonomy over the use of AI data.
