U.S. News Outlets Engage in Tech Cold War with OpenAI

Recently, several news media outlets have added new codes to their websites to block OpenAI 's web crawler tool GPTBot scans content on its platform. As The Guardian reported last week, CNN, The New York Times and Reuters have blocked GPTBot, and several other news and media giants have quietly made the move, including Disney, Bloomberg, The Washington Post, The Atlantic Monthly, Axios, Insider, ABC News, ESPN and The Gothamist.

 

The archival documents and news content held by these news organizations are important for training ChatGPT et al. (and other authors)artificial intelligence (AI)modeling, and providing accurate information to users is critical. As one industry executive put it, "Most Internet content is junk, while on the other hand, traditional media publishers provide a great deal of high-quality content in a fact-oriented manner."

 

The News Media Alliance, which represents nearly 2,000 publishers in the U.S., believes that the news media have a solid legal basis for copyright protection, said Danielle Coffey, president and CEO of the News Media Alliance. However, they are concerned that companies like OpenAI Such a company could further disrupt the already struggling news industry.
