China's total arithmetic power reaches 197 EFlops per second, MIIT announces second place in the world

At the opening ceremony of the 2023 China Arithmetic Conference and the second "Western Digital Valley" Arithmetic Industry Conference, Minister of Industry and Information Technology Jin Zhuanglong said in his speech that, as of now, the number of data center racks in use nationwide exceeds 7.6 million standard racks, making the total scale of China's arithmetic power 197EFlops (floating-point operations per second), the second highest in the world. 197EFlops (floating-point operations per second), ranking second globally.

At the same time, China has built 130 trunk fiber optic cables around the arithmetic hub nodes, significantly improving the performance of data transmission, and China's arithmetic industry has taken shape, in which the production of computing products such as servers, computers and smartphones is the first in the world.

Minister Jin Zhuanglong pointed out that arithmetic power has become a key productive force in the era of digital economy and an important foundation for the digital and intelligent transformation of the whole society. In order to further promote the development of the arithmetic industry, he emphasized the need to optimize the infrastructure layout, accelerate key technology research, stimulate the potential of convergent applications and establish an open and cooperative ecosystem. He encouraged the further enlargement, strengthening and optimization of the arithmetic industry in terms of infrastructure construction, industrial technology innovation and in-depth integration and application.

Previously, the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology released a research report on China's arithmetic service at the end of July. The report pointed out that the north, Shanghai and Guangzhou regions are in the leading position in terms of arithmetic services, while the central and western regions have improved significantly, but there is still a gap compared with the former. The report puts forward the "Arithmetic Service Development Index System", which examines three dimensions: the degree of resource servicing, the level of application empowerment, and the level of service experience.

Overall, China's Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta, and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei regions are leading in the development of arithmetic services. The western region, on the other hand, is richer in resources such as land and energy, and has great potential for development. For example, Sichuan has already ranked among the top by virtue of its location, but there is still room for improvement in the overall level of arithmetic services in the west.
