Overseas artists join call for generative AI to be useful in art making, but regulation is needed

These artists agree that generative AI is a powerful tool that helps lower the barriers to entry into the art field. Traditionally, only those with the right social connections or financial resources have been able to venture into the field of art, and the advent of AI technology has changed this by giving more people the opportunity to participate in the creative process.

However, despite the potential of generative AI, artists also expressed concerns in a joint letter. They worry that the technology could be misused, leading to problems such as copying existing works or even data theft. The artists emphasized the need for a comprehensive set of regulatory measures in order to protect the rights of creators and the fruits of their labor.

Of course, many artists have major concerns about AI. At the same time, artists are not unanimous, and many others benefit from this new technology. The debate about generative AI has not always included these voices; in fact, the debate has often become polarized and destructive, with artists who use AI facing harassment and even death threats.

The following open letter stems from our ongoing consultation. The letter was written by a group of artists, with our support, and we hope that it will help to promote an inclusive, informed discussion.
